Brooke Rothford, MS is an LPC who graduated from California State University Fresno in 2013. As a seasoned clinician, Brooke has 11 years of experience in the field and is licensed in Nevada, California. What makes you enjoy working with seniors?

As a Senior myself I enjoy being able to relate to my Senior clients due to the fact that we have experienced many of the same ups and downs of life, as well as many innovations, technology advancement and changes in our views throughout the years. Even though we are all different and experience life in our own way and may see things differently due to cultural or economic differences, we still have the same basic wants such as to be happy and productive. Why do you think online therapy is effective for seniors?

Advancements in technology has made online counseling available for those that may not be able to physically get to therapy, or hard to get to therapy due to work hours or family commitments, or just simply due to not being sure if they are comfortable sitting with someone and discussing their most emotional thoughts and feelings in person. I love that it gives more access to people to get the help that they need to move forward and accomplish their goals towards whatever that means for them. How do you approach therapy sessions?

Even though our first meeting has to cover a lot of ground with an initial assessment, I always look forward to getting to know my clients and what brings them to therapy. I hope to create a feeling of being genuine, caring and safe so that each client can express their thoughts and feelings and know they are being listened to. What is your advice to someone who is starting therapy for the first time?

Just relax and know that the therapist is there to help you and not to go against you. They generally care about what you are going through and can help you the best when they are being told the truth and you are open to new ideas.
