About Alyssa

Alyssa Mineo, Psy.D is a Psychologist who graduated from Carlos Albizu University in 2019. As a seasoned clinician, Alyssa has 5 years of experience in the field and is licensed in Texas, Pennsylvania, and all other states eligible in PSYPACT. What makes you enjoy working with seniors?

Somehow, society has made aging synonymous with a lack of excitement or purpose, a view propagated by a culture consumed with an anti-aging mindset and ageist stereotypes. I enjoy helping individuals navigate the inevitable aspects of aging, such as loss, health issues, and life transitions, by exploring their rich life experiences and wisdom, while also celebrating their resilience and strengths. Why do you think online therapy is effective for seniors?

Much of my career has been fueled by a desire to offer a supportive space where older adults can explore their thoughts, emotions, and memories, helping them find peace, purpose, and joy in their later years. I believe that increasing access and flexibility to services fosters a sense of independence and autonomy, enabling individuals to take an active role in managing their mental health. Fortunately, technology helps remove common barriers to seeking support by eliminating the need for transportation, reducing anxiety through participating in treatment in the comfort and safety of one's home, and ensuring continuity of care for those who travel often or move residences.

How do you approach therapy sessions? In session, you can expect to be met with authenticity and careful consideration of your personal history, through offering unconditional support and acceptance without judgment. Through the use of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, we work together to address thought patterns and behaviors that may contribute to emotional distress related to adjusting to life changes.

The overarching goal for each client is to develop healthier ways of thinking and coping skills through a flexible, tailored approach that meets you where you are, ultimately guiding you toward meaningful and lasting change. What is your advice to someone who is starting therapy for the first time? My advice is to take things slowly and be gentle with yourself as you begin this journey.

Therapy is a process, and it's important to be patient and intentional with yourself as you explore new ways of thinking, feeling, and coping. Foundational aspects of healing, like mindfulness and awareness of your thoughts and behaviors, take time to develop, so it's okay if it doesn't feel natural at first. A key part of the process is practicing self-compassion—remember that it's normal to have ups and downs along the way, and that progress isn't always linear.

Celebrate your efforts, no matter how small they may seem. Each step forward is significant, and it's important to acknowledge the work you're putting in to create positive change. Trust the process, and know that with time, you'll gain deeper insights and develop stronger coping tools to navigate life's challenges.
